Types of Funds

The Rockland Community Foundation offers a variety of different funding vehicles to help you realize your charitable goals.

Donor Advised Funds offer the greatest flexibility for donors interested in being active and involved in recommending grants to charitable projects or organizations. This type of fund can be a cost effective alternative to creating and maintaining your own private foundation by eliminating the need to establish your own 501 (c) (3) tax-exempt organization and continue the on-going reporting requirements.

Field of Interest Funds support particular areas of interest, specific programs, causes or geographic areas within Rockland County. A donor can create their own Field of Interest Fund or may choose donate to one of the several funds maintained by the RCF that respond to changing community needs and benefit Rockland County causes.

Designated Funds provide ongoing support to a specific agency or charitable cause selected by the donor. Nonprofit Organization Endowment Funds allow nonprofits to grow their assets and provide a source of annual income to meet both current and future needs.

Project Funds allow nonprofit organizations who are in the process of filing for 501(c)(3) status to use the Community Foundation as its fiscal agent.  In some cases, the Community Foundation establishes Project Funds to serve as the 501(c)(3) organization for charitable causes so individuals or groups can avoid the time and expense of creating one.

Scholarship Funds can be established benefit students at any education level. For example: you can create a fund that recognizes students at your alma mater or area business owners can create an annual scholarship that honors a top performing athlete or creative artist.  Some donors choose to act as advisors, while others appoint committees to select recipients. A fund can be started to memorialize a loved one. Starting such a fund is simple, provides all donors to the fund the maximum tax advantages afforded by the RCF’s tax-exempt status and relieves the family of the burden of dealing with establishing a legal entity to accept donations.

Unrestricted Funds are not specifically designated for use by any particular agency, cause or area of interest allowing our local Board of Trustees to respond to the pressing and often changing charitable needs in the community today and forever.
The Foundation can provide management
cost savings and the capacity to provide
even greater investment returns.

The Founders Circle provides general support for the Foundation in its mission to increase charitable giving in Rockland County. Gifts can be pledged by individuals, groups, or businesses.
